Body Fat Calculator

Estimate body fat percentage from tape measurements.

Uses the US Navy circumference method to estimate body fat from your neck, waist and hip measurements — more informative than BMI, because it accounts for where mass sits.

About Body Fat Calculator

The US Navy method estimates body fat from circumference measurements rather than weight alone. It works because fat distributes predictably: for a given height, a larger waist relative to the neck indicates more fat, and the equation was fitted to that relationship across a large group.

It is more informative than BMI for exactly this reason — it uses where the mass sits, not just how much there is. Two people of identical height and weight can have very different waist and neck measurements, and this will separate them where BMI cannot.

It remains an estimate from a tape measure, typically landing within three or four percentage points of a DEXA scan. That accuracy depends almost entirely on measuring consistently: same places, same tension, ideally the same time of day. Because the errors are consistent too, it tracks change over weeks far more reliably than it reports any single absolute figure.

How to use it

  1. Choose metric or imperial

Switching converts what you have already entered rather than reinterpreting it.

  2. Enter your details

Everything is calculated in your browser as you type. Nothing is sent anywhere.

  3. Read the result in context

Each figure is shown with what the formula can and cannot tell you.

Frequently asked questions

Where exactly do I measure?

Neck just below the larynx, sloping slightly downward at the front. Waist at the navel for men and at the narrowest point for women. Hips at the widest point. Keep the tape snug without compressing the skin, and stand relaxed rather than holding your breath.

How accurate is it?

Typically within three or four percentage points of a DEXA scan, which is good for a tape measure and poor compared to a scan. Its real strength is consistency — measure the same way each time and the trend is trustworthy even when the absolute number is a little off.

What is a healthy body fat percentage?

Broadly 10–20% for men and 18–28% for women, with athletes often lower and the healthy range rising with age. These bands are wide because healthy varies considerably between individuals.

Why does it say my measurements will not work?

The formula takes a logarithm of the waist minus the neck, so the waist must be larger than the neck — and for women, waist plus hip larger than neck. If it is not, either the measurements are swapped or one is in different units.
