About Concrete Calculator

Concrete volume is length times width times depth, which is easy. The part that matters is what you do afterwards: add an allowance, and round bags up.

The allowance is not padding. Sub-base is never perfectly level, so the real depth is always a little more than the nominal one, and some concrete is always lost to spillage and what sticks in the mixer. Ten percent is the standard figure.

Running short is worse than it sounds. Stopping a pour and resuming later creates a cold joint — the two pours do not bond properly, leaving a permanent plane of weakness through the slab. You cannot fix it by adding more concrete afterwards; you have to break it out and start again.

The bag counts are worth a sanity check before you commit. A cubic metre is around 108 twenty-kilogram bags, which is well over two tonnes to carry, mix and place. Above roughly half a cubic metre, having ready-mixed delivered is usually cheaper and enormously less work.

How many bags of concrete in a cubic metre?

About 108 twenty-kilogram bags, 86 twenty-five kilogram bags, or 54 forty-kilogram bags. Each 20 kg bag yields roughly 0.009 m³ once mixed.

How thick should a concrete slab be?

100 mm is typical for a shed base, path or patio. A driveway carrying a car usually wants 150 mm and often reinforcement. Anything structural should be specified by someone qualified rather than by a calculator.

Why add 10% extra?

Because the ground is never perfectly level, some is lost to spillage, and running out mid-pour creates a cold joint — a permanent weakness you cannot repair by topping up. It is far cheaper to have a little left over.

Should I mix bags or order ready-mixed?

Below about half a cubic metre, bags are practical. Above it, ready-mixed delivered is usually cheaper per cubic metre and saves hours of mixing — and it arrives in one go, which removes the cold joint risk entirely.
