About Image Compressor

Large images are the single most common reason web pages feel slow. A photo straight out of a phone camera is often 4–8 MB, while the same picture displayed at the size a visitor actually sees it rarely needs more than a few hundred kilobytes. Compression closes that gap by re-encoding the image with a codec setting that discards detail the eye is unlikely to notice.

This compressor decodes your image in the browser, redraws it onto a canvas and re-encodes it at the quality you choose. You see the original size, the compressed size and the percentage saved before you commit to a download, so you can dial the quality up or down until the trade-off looks right on your own screen.

There is also a target-size mode. Give it a number — 200 KB for an email attachment, 1 MB for a forum upload — and it searches for the highest quality setting that still fits under your limit, so you do not have to guess at percentages.

How to compress an image

  1. Add your images

Choosing the right quality setting

Quality is not a percentage of visual fidelity — it is a knob on the encoder, and the relationship between the number and what you see is not linear. In practice a few ranges cover almost every use case:

  • 90–100% — near-lossless. Use it for photography portfolios and print-bound images where artefacts are unacceptable.
  • 75–85% — the sweet spot for the web. Most people cannot tell an 80% JPEG from the original at normal viewing distance, and the file is typically 60–80% smaller.
  • 50–70% — aggressive. Fine for thumbnails, background images and anything displayed small.
  • Below 50% — visible blocking and colour banding. Only worth it when file size matters far more than appearance.

A note about PNG

PNG is a lossless format, so it has no quality dial in the way JPEG and WebP do. If you compress a PNG here, the tool re-encodes it as PNG and the savings are usually modest — mostly from dropping metadata and simplifying the encode.

For photographs saved as PNG, the far bigger win is changing format. Converting to JPEG or WebP frequently cuts the file to a tenth of its size with no visible difference. If your PNG has a transparent background, use WebP rather than JPEG, because JPEG cannot store transparency.

Frequently asked questions

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. The compressor uses the browser's own image decoder and Canvas API, so the file never leaves your device. You can confirm this by opening your browser's network tab while compressing — there are no upload requests. It also means the tool keeps working if your connection drops after the page has loaded.

How much smaller will my image get?

It depends heavily on the source. A photo straight from a camera at 80% quality typically shrinks by 60–85%. An image that has already been compressed once will shrink much less, because the detail that compression removes has already been removed. Screenshots and graphics with flat colour often compress best when converted to WebP.

Will compression reduce the image dimensions?

No. Compression changes how the pixels are stored, not how many there are — the width and height stay identical. If you also want fewer pixels, use the Image Resizer, which is usually the bigger saving of the two for oversized photos.

Does compressing repeatedly damage the image?

Yes, for lossy formats. Every JPEG or WebP save discards a little more information, and the losses accumulate — this is called generation loss. Always compress from the original file rather than re-compressing an already compressed copy.

Which formats can I compress?

JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP and AVIF, up to 50 MB per file. Animated GIFs are flattened to their first frame, so use a dedicated GIF tool if you need to keep the animation.

Is there a limit on how many images I can compress?

You can queue up to 30 images per batch, and there is no daily limit, no account and no watermark. The batch cap exists because everything is decoded in your browser's memory, and larger batches can crash a tab on mobile devices.
