About Julian Date Converter

A Julian Date counts days continuously since noon UTC on 1 January 4713 BCE, with no months, years, leap years or calendar reform to account for along the way — which is precisely why astronomy uses it. Subtracting two Julian Dates gives the exact number of days between them by simple arithmetic; doing the same with two calendar dates means correctly handling variable month lengths, leap years and, for historical dates, the Julian-to-Gregorian calendar switch.

It starts at noon rather than midnight for a practical, historical reason: 18th-century astronomers observing through the night wanted a single date to cover an entire night's observations rather than having the date roll over partway through, which is exactly what would happen with a midnight-based day.

Frequently asked questions

Why does the Julian Date always end in .5 at midnight UTC?

Because the count starts from noon, not midnight — so midnight UTC always falls exactly half a day after the most recent whole-number Julian Date, giving a fractional part of .5. Noon UTC gives a whole number.

Is this the same as the Julian calendar?

No, despite the similar name — they're unrelated. The Julian calendar was a calendar system (the predecessor to the Gregorian calendar most of the world uses now); the Julian Date is a continuous day-numbering scheme used in astronomy, named after Julius Scaliger, not Julius Caesar.

What's the difference between Julian Date and Modified Julian Date?

Modified Julian Date (MJD) is JD − 2400000.5, which both shortens the number for everyday use and moves the day boundary to midnight instead of noon. Some fields (particularly satellite and GPS work) use MJD instead of JD for exactly those reasons.

Does this handle dates before the Gregorian calendar reform?

The conversion is computed proleptically — extending the Gregorian calendar's rules backward past 1582, when it was actually adopted — which is the standard convention for astronomical Julian Date calculations, rather than switching to the older Julian calendar's rules for historical dates.
