About Planet Weight Calculator

Weight is the force gravity exerts on your mass, and it changes from body to body because surface gravity itself depends on both how much mass a planet has and how far its surface sits from that mass's centre — a small, dense planet and a large, diffuse one can have similar surface gravity for very different reasons. Every value here is the real, published surface gravity of that body relative to Earth's, not a rounded or invented figure.

Mass is a different, unchanging quantity — the actual amount of matter making you up, which stays exactly the same wherever you are. A bathroom scale reads weight, not mass, which is the entire reason this calculation is even meaningful: the same unchanged person genuinely reads a different number standing on a scale on the Moon than on Earth.

Jupiter and Saturn are worth a second look on the results: despite being far more massive than Earth, their surface gravity (defined at the visible cloud tops, since neither has a solid surface) is only moderately higher for Jupiter and actually slightly lower for Saturn — both are large enough that 'surface' sits much further from the planet's centre of mass than Earth's does, which works against their far greater total mass.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my weight on Saturn barely different from Earth?

Saturn's surface gravity is actually slightly lower than Earth's, despite Saturn being vastly more massive — because 'surface' for a gas giant means the visible cloud tops, far from the planet's centre of mass, and that extra distance reduces surface gravity by roughly as much as the extra mass increases it.

Is this the same as my weight in zero gravity or in orbit?

No — this calculates surface gravity on each body, not the weightlessness of orbit or deep space. An astronaut in orbit is still well within Earth's gravity; they feel weightless because they and their spacecraft are both in continuous free fall together, not because gravity has switched off.

Why does the Moon show a separate entry from the planets?

It's the one body in this list that isn't a planet, but it's the most commonly asked-about 'what would I weigh' comparison — low enough gravity (about a sixth of Earth's) that the difference is dramatic and immediately intuitive, unlike most of the actual planets.

Where do these gravity figures come from?

Each body's published surface (or, for the gas giants, cloud-top) gravity, expressed as a ratio to Earth's — standard reference data, not estimated or derived here from mass and radius.
