Diluting a solution doesn't change how much solute is in it — it only spreads the same amount across more volume, which is exactly what C1V1 = C2V2 says: concentration times volume (the total amount of solute) before dilution equals concentration times volume after, because that quantity didn't go anywhere.

Four numbers are involved and any three pin down the fourth, but in practice the question is almost always the same one: 'I have a stock solution at C1, I want a target concentration C2 in a final volume V2 — how much stock (V1) do I actually measure out?' That's the calculation this defaults to, though every other rearrangement works the same way.

The instruction that trips people up: once V1 is known, the rest of the final volume is made up with solvent — but 'add V2 of solvent' is wrong and overshoots the target, because V1 is already part of V2. The correct instruction is to add solvent until the total volume reaches V2, which is a smaller amount of solvent than V2 itself by exactly V1.

Frequently asked questions

Why is 'add V2 of solvent' wrong?

Because V1 — the stock solution already measured out — is part of the final volume V2, not separate from it. Adding V2 worth of solvent on top of V1 overshoots the target volume by V1 and under-dilutes the result. The correct approach is to add solvent until the total volume reaches V2.

What is a serial dilution?

A sequence of dilutions where each step's output becomes the next step's stock — commonly by a fixed factor, like diluting 10-fold each time to get 1x, 0.1x, 0.01x concentrations in a row. Each individual step is exactly this same C1V1=C2V2 calculation, run repeatedly.

Does this work for any concentration unit, not just molarity?

Yes — the equation is unit-agnostic as long as C1 and C2 use the same unit as each other, and V1 and V2 use the same unit as each other. Molarity, percent concentration and mg/mL all work identically; just keep the two concentration entries in one consistent unit.

What's a dilution factor?

The ratio of final volume to stock volume used (V2 ÷ V1) — a '1:10 dilution' means the final volume is ten times the stock volume taken, which is the same statement as C2 being one-tenth of C1. It's a quick way to describe a dilution without naming actual concentrations.
