About pH Calculator

pH is a logarithmic scale — each whole step is a tenfold change in hydrogen ion concentration, which is precisely why it exists: raw hydrogen ion concentrations in ordinary solutions span many orders of magnitude, from around 1 mol/L in a strong acid down to 10⁻¹⁴ mol/L in a strong base, and nobody wants to work with numbers that small directly. pH = -log₁₀[H⁺] compresses that whole range into the familiar 0–14.

pOH is the same idea for hydroxide ions, and the two are linked: pH + pOH = 14 (at 25°C), because the product of hydrogen and hydroxide ion concentrations in water is a near-constant, Kw = 1.0 × 10⁻¹⁴. That relationship is what makes any one of the four values — pH, pOH, [H⁺], [OH⁻] — enough to derive all the others, which is exactly what this does.

The pH + pOH = 14 relationship is specifically a 25°C figure, not a universal constant — Kw shifts with temperature, so it holds well at typical room/lab temperature and drifts slightly outside that range. For anything requiring real precision at an unusual temperature, that's worth accounting for separately.

Frequently asked questions

Why does pH have a negative sign in its definition?

Hydrogen ion concentrations in ordinary solutions are always fractions of a mole per litre (1 or smaller), so their logarithm is negative — the minus sign in pH = -log₁₀[H⁺] flips that back to a positive, easily readable number rather than working with negative values throughout.

Is pH 7 always neutral?

At 25°C, yes — that's specifically where [H⁺] and [OH⁻] are equal. At other temperatures the neutral point shifts slightly because Kw changes with temperature, though the shift is small enough to ignore for most everyday purposes.

Can pH go below 0 or above 14?

Yes, mathematically — extremely concentrated strong acids or bases can push pH outside the familiar 0–14 range. It's uncommon in practice because most real solutions people work with fall inside it, but the scale itself has no hard boundary there.

What's the difference between pH and titratable acidity?

pH measures the concentration of free hydrogen ions at that instant; titratable acidity measures the total amount of acid present, including acid that hasn't yet dissociated into free ions. A weak acid solution can have a relatively high (less acidic-reading) pH while still containing a large total amount of acid — the two measure genuinely different things.
