About WebP to JPG

WebP is excellent on the web and awkward everywhere else. Images saved from a website often arrive as .webp files, and then refuse to open in older photo viewers, will not import into some design software, and get rejected by upload forms that only accept JPEG and PNG.

Converting to JPG solves that immediately. JPEG is the most widely supported image format in existence — every operating system, printer, camera, editor and web form handles it without complaint.

The trade-off is file size: the JPEG will usually be larger than the WebP it came from, because JPEG's compression is simply less efficient. That is the price of universal compatibility.

How to convert WebP to JPG

  1. Add your WebP files

    85–90% preserves the appearance closely. Lower values give smaller files.

  3. Pick a background colour

    Transparent areas need a solid colour, since JPEG cannot store transparency. White is the default.

Frequently asked questions

Why will nothing on my computer open a .webp file?

WebP support outside browsers arrived late. Recent versions of Windows and macOS handle it, but older systems and much third-party software do not. Converting to JPG sidesteps the problem entirely.

Will the JPG be bigger than the WebP?

Usually yes, often by 30–50%, because JPEG compresses less efficiently. You are trading file size for compatibility.

Does this lose quality?

Slightly. The WebP is decoded and re-encoded as JPEG, and JPEG is lossy, so a small amount of information is discarded. At 90% quality the difference is very hard to see. Because the source was probably lossy too, this is a second-generation encode — keep your originals if you can.

What happens to transparency?

Transparent pixels are filled with the background colour you choose. JPEG has no alpha channel. If you need transparency preserved, convert to PNG instead.

Can I convert animated WebP files?

Only the first frame is converted, because JPEG cannot store animation. For animated files you would need a format that supports it, such as GIF or MP4.
